A core pillar of science is that it reflects some fact about the world, a fact which should be able to be reproduced. But often it cannot, and some blame “p-hacking” – choosing analyses that generate a p-value that meets some arbitrary criterion. Others blame publishing standards or the very concept of p-value itself. Others, more apocalyptically, are claiming the scientific process itself is broken. In a follow-up to a brain bag I held last year, I’m going to get off my soapbox and get into more of the nitty gritty of what a p value is, how it can be hacked, why would you want to do so, and how some journals are trying to save face through it all.
