Medication and Other Challenges in Treating Mental Illness in Pregnancy: Using Clinical Cases to Illustrate the Issues

In the first portion of this grand rounds, Dr. Clinebell will discuss the management of three cases of pregnant women with chronic, severe mental illness.  Dr. Clinebell will then provide an update on the current literature regarding lithium and antipsychotic medications in pregnancy and while breastfeeding.  Drs. Debrunner and Sit will lead a discussion about medication management, monitoring, collaboration with OB colleagues, and psychosocial treatments.       

Learning Objectives:  At the conclusion of the lecture, participants will be able to:

·         Understand how to approach psychotropic medication management in pregnant women

·         Explain how to manage lithium and antipsychotics (including Long Acting Injectable Antipsychotic Agents) in pregnant women

·         Discuss current literature and practice regarding use of antipsychotics in pregnancy

·         Review psychosocial challenges in chronically ill pregnant women
