Postdoctoral Position - Department of Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science (Biomechanics and Cerebral Aneurysms)

Department:Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science (MEMS)
Application Deadline: August 26, 2016

The University of Pittsburgh has an opening for a Post-Doctoral Research Associate in the area of biomechanics of cerebral aneurysms (IAs). Funding for this position is provided by an R01 award from the National Institute of Health. The post-doctoral associate will join our cohesive, multi-disciplinary team of world leaders from five institutions with expertise in clinical management and treatment of IAs, biology of the IA wall, patient specific computational modeling of IAs, biomechanics of IA walls, and bioimaging of soft tissue. The objective of this program is to identify the relationship between abnormal flow conditions and changes to the aneurysm that lead to structurally fragile walls. We will use biomechanical, histological and bioimaging data obtained from a large cohort of resected human aneurysm domes, combined with patient characteristics and biomechanical modeling (fluid and solid) to develop a clinically useful framework for assessing risk of wall vulnerability.

Highly motivated researchers with excellent experimental skills relevant to the biomechanical and bioimaging analysis of cerebral aneurysms are invited to apply. Prior research on the pathology of cerebral aneurysms will be of great value for this position. The successful applicant should have a strong publication record, effective communication skills as well as the ability to work well independently and in groups. Familiarity with computational analysis including modern programming language(s), programming and optimization techniques as well as computational modeling of mechanobiology are welcome.

The appointment is initially for one year with the possibility of extension for up to 5 years, depending on performance and availability of funding. The PI of the project considers career development of the group members to be of great importance. This position is designed for professional growth including opportunities for independent relevant sub-projects and development of professional and technical skills. Advancement into a non-tenure stream faculty position is a possibility.

The University of Pittsburgh offers an excellent benefits package for full time employees which are summarized inhttp://www2.hr.pitt.edu/benefits/pdf/SummaryGuide/2016-2017/#p=1.
